Juneau –The Alaska House of Representatives today passed House Concurrent Resolution 4, which proclaims May 2025 as Myositis Awareness Month in Alaska. Sponsored byRepresentative Dan Saddler (R–Chugiak-Eagle River), the resolution aims to raise public awareness about myositis, a family of rare autoimmune diseases that affects thousands of Americans by attacking healthy muscle tissue.
Though uncommon, myositis can have life-altering effects, including chronic pain, severe muscle weakness, and reduced mobility. Because the disease is difficult to diagnose, many patients suffer for years before receiving proper treatment.
HCR 4 encourages Alaskans to learn more about the signs and symptoms of myositis and to support efforts that help patients access care earlier. Increased awareness could also spark greater interest in research and education about this rare condition, ultimately leading to improved outcomes for those living with the disease.
Rep. Saddler, the bill’s sponsor, emphasized the importance of spreading knowledge and compassion: “Myositis may be rare, but the people who live with it are our neighbors, family members, and friends. With greater awareness, we can improve lives by reducing the time it takes to get a diagnosis and begin treatment. HCR 4 is a small step that can make a big difference.”
