JUNEAU, Alaska — Today, the Alaska House of Representatives unanimously passed House Bill 278 by Rep. Mia Costello, R-Anchorage, to strengthen and expand economic, educational and cultural partnerships between Alaska and Ireland, the gateway to the European Union.
“Ireland is a dynamic, innovation-driven economy with strengths in energy, technology, fisheries, aviation and education — sectors that align closely with Alaska’s own priorities,” Rep. Costello said. “HB 278 creates a durable framework for cooperation that will help diversify our economy, attract new investment, open new markets for Alaskan businesses and create opportunities for our workers and students.”
The five-member commission would be appointed by the governor with members serving two-year terms. Its mission includes:
- Advancing bilateral trade and investment between Alaska and Ireland.
- Initiating joint action on policy issues of mutual interest.
- Encouraging mutual economic support and infrastructure investment.
- Addressing other matters assigned by the governor or identified by the commission.
“By formalizing our relationship through a dedicated commission, Alaska can fully participate in cross-Atlantic partnerships that support trade in goods and services, collaborative research and shared solutions to common challenges,” Costello added. “This also aligns Alaska with other states that are actively engaging Ireland through the American Irish State Legislators Caucus and similar networks.”
Twenty-five states have an established Ireland Trade Commission. HB 278 positions Alaska to build long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships that will grow the state’s economy and expand opportunities.
The bill now goes to the Alaska Senate.
