Juneau, AK — Today, the Alaska House Republican Caucus issued a call to the Alaska Senate Majority, urging swift and decisive action on House Bill 381 before the special session concludes tomorrow, June 19. House Bill 381 establishes a predictable, volume-based Alternative Volumetric Tax (AVT) framework for the proposed Alaska LNG project. Project developers and energy experts have made it clear that this structural shift is absolutely critical to making the multi-billion-dollar natural gas pipeline economically viable for global investors.
On Friday, June 12, the House of Representatives advanced the legislation with an overwhelming 34-5 bipartisan majority, demonstrating a broad consensus that securing Alaska’s economic future takes precedence over political divisions.
“A high tax on a pipeline that never gets built yields exactly zero dollars for Alaskans. A competitive, fair tax structure on a real, functioning pipeline yields billions,” Minority Leader Rep. DeLena Johnson, R-Palmer, said. “We did the heavy lifting, vetted the details, and protected local municipalities. Now, the clock is running out, and the Senate needs to get this across the finish line.”
The House Republicans strongly urge their Senate colleagues to listen to the vast majority of Alaskans, recognize the extreme urgency of the hour, and pass House Bill 381.
